Lilla Shoulder Bag - Russian Hatch
Introducing the Lilla handcrafted leather shoulder bag in Russian hatch leather, meticulously made using traditional artisan methods and hand-stitched with durable waxed thread.
The leather, sourced from J&FJ Baker of Devon, England, is of unmatched quality and this specific leather not only is absolutely beautiful, but has a rather wonderful story behind it.
In 1786 a ship called the Matta Catharina, carrying hemp and leather sank just off the Devon/Cornwall coast. The leather it was carrying was a Russian leather that widely considered the finest in the world, tanned with birch oil, it was supple, rich and water resistant. In 1973 the wreck was discovered along with hundreds of leather hide bundles, preserved in the silt 30 metres below the surface.
Bakers Tannery studied some of the remaining rolls of leather, to recreate the leather’s unique colour, print, thickness, texture, supple yet firm handling, smell and durable qualities. They researched what is known about the tanning techniques and the naturally occurring materials that the original Russian artisans would have had available. The result is a stunning leather with a lovely hatch texture and a smokey, birchy smell.
Designed with elegance and functionality in mind, the bag features a beautifully curved flap that mirrors its silhouette, a convenient, hidden magnetic closure, and a double thickness, fully stitched strap, adjustable for versatile wear—over the shoulder or across the body with. asolid brass conway buckle. Inside, you'll find a single pocket, perfect for keeping essentials close at hand.
Available in Brown or Black.
Dimensions: H220mm x D105mm x W - Top of bag - 270mm, bottom of bag - 190mm

I only use the highest grade of leather, full grain leather that will display natural imperfections such as marks, scars and character from the hand dying processes, making each piece truly unique.
Everything I make is entirely handmade by me with locally, ethically sourced and sustainably tanned leather and materials with a focus on traditional craftsmanship, quality and longevity. Using traditional saddlery techniques and saddle stitching which ensures a stronger, more durable stitch than machine stitching, as it creates a knot with every stitch.
I aim for my products to be heirloom pieces that can last a lifetime, to ensure this each of my products come with a lifetime guarantee on all stitching and fastenings… Made to wear in, not out. Read more about my process here…
